Smoky eyes are a perennial classic for good reason: pair them with perfected skin and a bit of bronzer, and you’re good to go. Only thing is, it can be a fiddly – not to mention costly – look to apply, requiring brushes and different products galore.

That is unless, of course, you’re savvy to the powers of humble kohl. A few swipes of a good one, plus some smudging courtesy of a finger (or, if you want to get fancy, a cotton bud or blending brush) coupled with some licks of mascara, and you have yourself a properly accomplished-looking eye in about 10 seconds flat.

But that’s not all. Kohl doesn’t have to be blacker than black to pack a punch – it works just as well in a bright, bold colours. I’m currently stuck on a slick of deep, shimmery purple that is Bourjois Waterproof Contour Clubbing stick in Purple Night, but experimenting with coloured kohl is part of the joy, so play with shades until you find the one that makes your eyes pop (and if you’re still stuck on choosing a hue, take your cue from Jessica Alba, who favours a bright blue, or Cara Delevingne, who’s currently sporting rust-coloured kohl to events).

In terms of which shape to create, this one’s all about just doing what you would do with your favourite eyeshadow look with kohl. Like it winged out? Smudge in that direction and sharpen up the edges with a cotton bud dampened with a micellar water. Want it to hit your crease line? Draw in a super thick line and smudge. The easiest way to go, though, is simply to draw it in a loop around your eyes as I have in the video, and then to smudge.

A final word of advice on this look? If you miss the definition of black liner (check out our edit of the best eyeliners), just press your mascara want to the base of your lashes before wiggling them through – it’ll create the illusion of definition at the base.
