4 Reasons Why Lashes Are Staging A Come Back at LFW

1. YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK LIKE BARBIE.  PHEW.

At Sibling today, make-up artist Miranda Joyce was applying graphic eyelashes the size of fly-swats to model’s lids, which turned out to be two sets of falsies that she had flattened together with straightening irons.  ‘My assistant and I spent all day yesterday making them with straighteners’ she explained. ‘We accidentally melted a few of them!  The flatness of them is anti-pretty but they are still cool and gorgeous.’

2. THIS SEASON’S EYELASH ISN’T DATED

Also using falsies was Maria Comparetto for MAC at DAKS, who was taking the idea of a Twiggy lash but giving it a twist of cool girl style that took it away from a ‘60s connotation. Once on, she was ‘mashing’ the eyelashes with mascara and then along the bottom drawing on single strokes with the MAC Penultimate Eyeliner.  ‘I’m rough drawing them with a felt tip pen for a cool hand drawn feel.’

3.  LASHES ARE A THING OF ‘BEAUTY’

‘It’s all about the return to the things that make a woman womanly’ explained MAC’s Director of Make-up Artistry Terry Barber backstage at Jean Pierre Braganza. ‘It’s a philosophy more than a look.  We’re creating a strong glamorous face with a lifted brow, the curl of the eyelashes, a strong cheekbone.’  The final look was almost nothing but it had real beauty makeup elements and an eyeopening lash is firmly on the hitlist.  Old references of Gia and a young Janice Dickenson were touched upon but Barber was keen to say that this kind of beauty was nothing if it was not timeless.

4. MASCARA CAN BE EYELINER

At Julian MacDonald it those ‘90s models cropped up again, this time as the subject of the photo greats Lindbergh, Weber and of course Testino.  The eyes, painted on by Val Garland for L’Oreal Paris, were SMOKIN’ hot.  The sexiest smoky eyes London has seen probably since the ‘90s!   Garland used three products to intensify the lashline (the L’Oreal Paris Super Liner Smokissime, then the Super Liner Felt Tip Pen and then the Color Riche Mono eyeshadow).  For some additional ‘sexiness’ (as if this show needed any more?!?) Garland pushed mascara into the very root of the eyelash.  The effect intensified the eyeliner and in turn the eye, rather than feeling like an application of mascara.

The Italian in Milan are rarely without an obvious ‘Signorina lash’ but it will be interesting to see if this trend continues as far as Paris.  Keep your eyes peeled.
