Cushnie et Ochs – the design duo who put Michelle Obama in a crop top and vamped up maternity wear with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley – speak to our Fashion and Celebrity Director, Josh Newis-Smith about how you can do rework your working wardrobe with a seasoning of sexiness.

It’s hard to recall but, before Michelle Obama, the idea of a First Lady wearing a gown punctuated by cut-out panels, accessorized with bare shoulders and, heaven forbid, bare arms, too, was unthinkable. But when Mrs. Obama stepped out in a green silk dress skimming her knee with a peek-a-boo cleavage and a flashback noughties halter neck, the designers Cushinie et Ochs, in that moment, redefined ‘sexy business.’

The design duo behind the brand, Carly Cushnie and Michelle Och, met at Parsons Design School and certainly know a thing or two about sexifying your wardrobe, without transferring you into the trashy TOWIE territory. Carly and Michelle have gone on to repeatedly dress the former First Lady alongside A-list red carpet stars like Charlize Theron, Diane Kruger and Selena Gomez.

Speaking to InStyle UK about their very feminine approach to design, the pair said: “We are two women and there is an inherent femininity to the way we design. We design in an office of women so we know what we want from our clothes and it reads with our customers.” By using cut-out panels, as an empowering punctuation to style, it’s clear their dresses are girl power gowns for 2017.

As they prepare to celebrate their ten-year anniversary by introducing bags and shoes alongside their show-stopping – yet surprisingly versatile – architectural attire, Michelle and Carly talk about a new era of power dressing and just how you can bring a little Michelle Obama magic to your working wardrobes…

How can I ‘sexify’ my working wardrobe…

“This obviously really depends on where you work but as a brand we have a lot of dresses that are form-fitting and demure at the same time. Team these dresses with a well-cut jacket for work and just take it off for later in the evening. Alternatively, think about how you can rework separates by pairing a sweater with a form-fitting skirt or a pair of cropped trousers. It’s all about how you play around with the workwear elements and, if your office allows it, wear a great jumpsuit with a t-shirt underneath to make it work appropriate.”

Get yourself a ‘Lady Boss Jacket’…

“We have a number of great tailored jackets and we always keep a couple of pairs in the office in case we have to run to meetings. We like to call it the ‘Lady Boss Jacket.’ Jumpsuits are also a new version ‘power dressing’ as they are being worn in a similar way to how people used to wear trouser suits. You should also think of the body suit as a ‘power separate’ and it’s always great to play with your proportions – you can always put a jacket on and add jeans with the bodysuit outside of the office, too.”

You can make body con classy…

“It’s all about balance when it comes to body con. Generally, for us, if we design something that has a low neckline or something more revealing we give it a longer length so it’s not short and tight. I would always say reveal your best parts but balance them out evenly.”

Choose one area to flash, not everything…

“Go for one cut-out panel and balance it out another element of the dress. The worst thing you could do is opt for a mini skirt and high heels whilst baring your midriff at the same time. In these incidences go for an over the knee hem length and keep it chic. Always remember: choose one to show off, not your entire body.”

Find your ultimate dress…

“We always really concentrate on fit to make sure our woman feels comfortable, for instance, if you can’t wear a bra with a dress we make sure its supportive! Whatever is going on in the dress or whatever the trend you are following it needs to fit, it needs to be a colour that looks great on your skin and hopefully it should be something you can wear again and again during different seasons or different events. Our silhouettes are always sleek and timeless so you can come back to them whenever you want.”

Never underestimate the power of good underwear…

“If you want to look sexy, you can never underestimate a good pair of heels and investing in good underwear, they are, after all, the the foundations to any look. Of course, a nice lip can’t be underestimated too.”

Can I vamp up maternity wear…

“Bumps are so beautiful so you shouldn’t ever hide underneath a tent! Go for fitted dresses that support you from the inside with strong fabric and a beautiful neckline – that’s a great way to look VERY sexy whilst not affecting your confidence.”

Sprinkle some Michelle Obama magic…

“When the former First Lady wore our crop top on Stephen Colbert it was something nobody expected her to wear. I mean the First Lady wearing a crop top seemed pretty unlikely before Michelle Obama! She is a walking example of how dressing has changed for women and she shows, whatever position you are in, you should never be afraid to flatter your frame.”
