London Fashion Week might have tonnes of stylish and famous attendees, but it’s safe to say that Queen Elizabeth II literally outranks them all. So, when the Queen of England made her shock debut in the front row of the Richard Quinn show this week, our jaws may have hit the floor. But, as her appearance reminded us, Her Royal Highness has always been a sartorial force to be reckoned with.

Going all the way back to June 1953, a 27-year-old Princess ascended to the throne in a coronation gown bejeweled with symbolism. It was a dress that could only have been worn by a Queen of England: embroidered with the floral emblems of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth and – at the request of Elizabeth herself – made of satin, like her wedding dress six years earlier. Much like her first coronation gown, Queen Elizabeth’s colourful wardrobe has never failed to assert her royal image – and its evolution over the decades has made her a fashion icon with both style and purpose.

At the start of her reign she favoured fairytale ball-gowns and shimmering satin frocks. In the 60s her style moved towards much more distinctive tailored, full-skirted suits, which accentuated her tiny waist. Over the years, these tailored suits have become her staple, emphasizing her status as a world leader.

She has not put a sartorial foot wrong and has never had a fashion faux pas. Her impeccable style is what has ensured her place as an icon with many looking to her as style inspiration, and even Dolce & Gabbana basing an entire collection around her signature looks.
