The Oscar nominated star of Lady Bird. Saoirse Ronan joins Joshington Hosts and becomes your agony aunt.

You can be nominated for three Oscars and be a Golden Globe winner but sometimes all you covert in life is a hug from This Morning’s Ruth Langsford. At the start of our interview, Saoirse Ronan proudly informed me, “I just did This Morning which was so exciting! I even got a hug off Ruth – I love her!” You and me both, hun!

Lady Bird has become the girl power movie of the year both on and off screen. The coming of age story set in a Catholic girls school in California is one of the most groundbreaking films this year for many reasons. Firstly, the female protagonist’s trajectory is not dictated by a male romance (rare) and secondly the writer and director, Greta Gerwig is female and only the fifth woman to be nominated for Best Director as the Oscars (evidently even rarer!).

For all its big themes it’s the relationship between Lady Bird and her mother that is the most comedic and in turn, heart breaking. I was still crying over the conclusion of the film on the tube home and immediately had to message my mother about being a ‘bad child.’ It was THAT touching.

Saoirse is taking away her own lessons from the film, too. “Since watching it as an audience member, it makes you realize that everyone has gone through their own stuff and nobody has got everything figured out. Especially if on the outside you look like you do. When you look at the cool kids in Lady Bird’s world, like Kyle (Timothee Chalamet) it seems so great and gloss – they have money, a nice house and everyone loves them. But everyone has their own issue and I love that Greta Gerwig shows that.”

With Saorise playing out the ultimate example of teenage angst we thought she would be perfectly placed to give you life advice, strap yourselves in…

Reader: My mum caught me shimmying down the drainpipe after curfew. How can I get her back on side?

Saoirse Ronan: “Oh my god is this Rizzo? Rizzo have you phoned in? I would do something nice for your Mam. Obviously apologize and say, ‘it was a stupid thing to do,’ but also explain why you did it. Then get your Mam some flowers and write her a note because really all you need to say at the end of the day is, ‘mega soz and I love ya!’ I used to send my Mam paper planes, with little messages on when I was a kid. So would throw them at her then just run away!”

Reader: I don’t feel sassy enough – how can I rebrand myself ‘Lady Bird’ style?

Saorise Ronan: “Awww! Don’t rebrand yourself. It’s hard to and I don’t know what age you are but I do get that it’s hard to be yourself. It’s also totally ok to not know who you are and spend time figuring things out. One of the things that will really help you figure out where you belong is find people who like the same music as you. I know I went through a stage going, ‘I am never going to have any friends or find anyone similar to me.,’ But you kinda just do and you can only do that by going, ‘this is who I am. Maybe I am not stereotypically cool or sassy or whatever but I am myself!’ Then a couple of clicks of the finger a hair flick too, obvs!”

Reader: I need to raise my flirting game – do you have any tips to win over the boy I fancy?

Saoirse Ronan: “I wouldn’t be into a hair flick. I am not a very good flitter, I am not sure if you have guessed that. I was pretty bad, up to the point where I would be really mean to people I fancy which is really childish – I realize that now. I would just go up to them and say, ‘here what are you up to after school? Are you going to football?’ Talk about football! Actually get in with the mates first, make friends with his circle and just be like, ‘oh, I didn’t see you there.’ That is what Lady Bird does and it works a treat. She’s friends with Jenna and then just ends up having really disappointing sex with Kyle so if that’s what you want, follow that piece of advice!”
