It's All Change At Cavalli As Surprising New Creative Director Is Named

There is a new dawn for Roberto Cavalli as the British menswear designer Paul Surridge has been announced as the new Creative Director of the brand, replacing Peter Dundas who left the position in October last year. Prepare for a new, more Cavalli girl with androgynous attire…

With immediate effect, Surridge will assume responsibility over all the group’s brands and for all creative functions. His first showing for the house of Cavalli will be during Milan fashion week in September this year.

But what will the new Cavalli girl wear? Will it still be ostentatious, all-out, glamour? If the designer’s pedigree is anything to go by, the Cavalli girl’s wardrobe is about to get a shake up.

Having graduated from Central Saint Martins in London, Surridge started his career in the refined modern world of Calvin Klein before joining Christopher Bailey for a three-year crash course in everything British and heritage between 2003 and 2007. But, his big break came in 2007 when he was appointed the Design Director of Jil Sander’s Menswear collections under Mr Modern himself, Raf Simons, where sharp suits and industrial architecture inspired a pared back aesthetic.

From 2011 to 2014 Surridge was the Creative Director at Z Zegna where his audience was “a generation of gentleman,” to quote the man himself. Modernity and flashbacks to the refined fashions of Pierre Cardin took centre stage, taking the brand away from its more romantic era, see above. His CV doesn’t stop there, Surridge also acted as the Creative Consultant for Acne Studios, overseeing the brand’s highly coveted menswear collections and saw the birth of many coveted classics.

Paul Surridge said of the appointment today: “I am honoured and proud to carry forward the legacy of this extraordinary Italian house. This is a unique opportunity to contribute a new chapter to the Roberto Cavalli universe, which positively celebrates the beauty, sensuality and power of women. It is my intention to show the passion I share for the codes and vision on which Roberto Cavalli built his brand whilst celebrating the excellence of Italian craftsmanship.”
